Lead Technician Animal Care (21/145)

£21,261 – £22,473 per annum

37 hours per week


Location: Nunsthorpe Campus, Grimsby

We are currently seeking a reliable and dedicated individual who has experience and training in education of animal management for the exciting role of Lead Technician in Animal Care.

As lead technician you will manage the technical support team within the Animal care department and be responsible for the management of the health and welfare of the Animal care departments animal collection together with the coordination and running of our commercial outlets including day kennels and dog grooming.

Your main responsibility as lead technician will be for the well-being of all animals and the overseeing of the animal care technical support, supervising other staff and learners within the practical environment.

Other key duties include:

– Coordinating and leading the technical team including the development of staff rotas

– Managing and providing animal husbandry (including cleaning, feeding, watering, providing enrichment and enclosure maintenance)

– Coordinating the veterinary care of animals within the collection – Administering animal medication prescribed by vets

– Maintaining records including licenses with the local authority

– Ordering supplies and services in line with the maintenance and running of practical areas and general husbandry of animals in collection

– Ensuring practical areas are fully resources and ready for use in practical teaching and learning lessons

– Organising tours and demonstrations to designated groups and visitors.

– Designation and supervision of student groups (from Level 1-6 in Animal Care and Animal Management) working in practical animal care areas in line with the requirements of the curriculum intent

– Maintaining animal health records

– Managing finances

– Coordinating the staffing of technicians and practical areas for practical delivery

– The maintenance of stock books and other stock records and accurate record keeping

– Liaising with external stakeholders

– Maintenance of health and safety records

– Housekeeping and general maintenance of hygiene

Essential Key Skills required:

– Handling a range of species including companion animals, birds, reptiles and larger livestock

– Competence in undertaking health checks on a range of species including companion animals, birds, reptiles and larger livestock

– Competence in maintaining animal accommodation in line with maintaining good health and husbandry of animals

– Developing animal feeding plans in line with maintaining good health and husbandry of animals

– Competence in using IT resources including databases and report writing

– Good organisational skills

– Good communication skills

– Problem solving

– Driving license desirable

– Experience of administering medication to animals within a professional setting

Desirable Experience

– Experience of working in a customer facing environment

– Extensive experience of working in an animal establishment with a range of different species to maintain effective husbandry of animals (feeding, maintaining accommodation, handling, health checks)

– Providing support and guidance to learners within education / training setting

– Managing / maintaining practical areas

– Liaising with external stakeholders

Desirable Skills

– Undertaking risk assessments

– Coordination / management of a team

– Managing finances

– Managing supplies and services

Desirable Qualifications

– Minimum or level 3 qualification in animal management or related discipline essential

– Minimum of level 2 literacy and numeracy essential

– Degree or equivalent in animal management or related discipline

– Health and Safety / environmental management qualifications

– Qualification in estate maintenance / construction

– Qualification in management or leadership

– Animal first aid
